"Fill the Boot" for muscular dystrophy


(MIAMI, Nov. 3, 2014) – The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) is joining forces with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) and the Metro-Dade Firefighters International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local 1403 Thursday, Nov. 6, 2014, at 10 a.m. to kick-off the annual "Fill the Boot" drive event with a news conference at the Firefighter Memorial Building, 8000 NW 21st.

Firefighters will be collecting at street lights throughout the county the weekend of Nov. 7, 2014. All funds collected will provide research and family support counseling in our community, help purchase wheelchairs and communication devices and will give children with neuromuscular diseases the chance to attend MDA summer camp.

In the spirit of competition for a great cause, members of MDFR are officially challenging members of the Jacksonville Fire Department to “bring the heat” with a wager for this year’s boot drive. The department with the least collections must pay for the winning department station’s dinner.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the MDA boot drive; therefore, the goal for drive collections is $60,000. Last year, MDFR raised $43,000 for the cause. Since 2000, MDFR has been a pivotal partner for MDA’s boot drive, raising more than $1.3 million.

MDA is a volunteer health agency working to defeat neuromuscular diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive services and far-reaching professional and public health education.
